I am a firm believer in the power of networks. If you really want to investigate something, or need to gain knowledge of something specific, join a group of other people with the same interests as you. Spreading knowledge through networking is a powerful tool in learning new, or improving existing, skills.
At work we have professional network groups that deal with specific topics regarding programming, programming languages, architecture, scrum, and other IT-related matters.
I manage the network group that deal with functional programming languages, and the group is populated by people who have a keen interest in learning techniques in functional programming as well as new technologies.
I also manage a discussion group at one of Denmarks largest IT-newspapers – Version 2 – dealing specifically with the functional programming language F#. You can find the discussion group here (danish only).
